I had a great Father's Day this year. We were camping with nearly 20 families from my daughter's pre-K class and on Sunday morning around an extinguished campfire my daughter gave me some cards that she had made. No neckties, no BBQs, no weird golf stuff. Just out in nature, sitting in dirt, I got something no one had ever seen.
So now it's time to launch my blog. For lack of a better description, I'm a systems thinker in environmental sustainability. I have a day job that doesn't come close to this pursuit, but it pays the bills and allows me to think about our environment and what I'm doing to ensure a sustainable future for my children. I'm also a husband and a dad. My wife is one of the most tolerant women in the world for putting up with my weirdness. I have a spirited, independent 6-1/2 year old daughter that I couldn't love more. And we are just about to leave for China to adopt our 2-3/4 year old son. Perfect time to launch a blog with all my impending free time.
As a father and someone who cares deeply for our planet, it occurs to me that the Dad's Voice is usually missing in the environment discussion. Tree hugging Mommy bloggers number in the hundreds, if not thousands. But where does Dad fit into the conversation?
And so I introduce you to BluePlanet Dad. I plan to share my views and observations of life as a father raising kids to become stewards of the environment. I vow not to let this blog become an endless ramble about how humans are destroying the only home they have--because we all should be pretty current on The Bad News. My focus will be on the positive aspects of living within nature, learning from it, and promoting good stewardship while also having a little fun along the way.
I also vow to keep blog posts short. In fact, I'm hoping this first introductory entry will be the longest one I write. 'Cuz really. We're all busy. I'd just hope you could spare 2 minutes to listen to ol' Dad every once in a while.
